Wisconsin Fall Colors By Water

Remember that brave, selfless ‘Scon who reviewed 500+ Wisconsin fish fry’s throughout the state so we can find the best potato pancakes?

Well, there’s an unsung group of heroes who do something similar, except they review miles and miles of Wisconsin’s waterways for paddlers!

And they’re here to tell you that NOW is the best time to hit the water to soak up all the Fall Colors, paddle in hand.

Miles Paddled

  • Miles Paddled keys you in to the best paddling spots in Wisconsin

  • Have reviewed over 3,700 miles of waterways so far

  • Fall and winter paddling? Don’t wear cotton!

What is Miles Paddled?

Formed in 2008 by some paddling addicts who thought “Cripes, you can review trails, why not review waterways?”, Miles Paddled is a repository of waterway reviews for canoers and kayakers.

Much like a Google review for your local brewpub, Miles Paddled ranks paddles on a 5-star basis.

They’ve got a boatload of reviews for paddles all over the state (3,743.75 miles of water, to be exact), which you can view easily on this map.

When clicking on the link on the dot, it will bring you to the review page itself (like this thorough review of kayaking the shores of Door County and all its cool shipwrecks).

Maps, access points, launch/exit—Miles Paddled has it all. They even have some multi-day paddle camping trips you can try, too!

Even if you don’t use it this Fall, we definitely recommend bookmarking it for trips to come.

Fall Colors + Paddling

Perhaps the most epic pairing since someone first dunked a french fry in their Custard, paddling is a superb way to get your Fall Colors fix.

Not only can you avoid the crowds, but you’ll see your colors from a whole new angle.

This time of year, it’s important to remember that criminy that water is cold. A good rule of thumb for safe paddling is when the air and water temp combined equals 120.

Use a pool thermometer, or you may be able to find the respective water temps on USGS.

Regardless of when you go, make sure to never wear cotton. When wet, it wicks away your body temperature faster than bare skin.

Synthetics or wool are a great choice. Even when wet, wool will still insulate you.

So pack a dry bag with an extra change of clothes, pocket some cheese, and stash a couple two-three beers (for after the paddle) and get out ‘der!

Nuts and Seeds 🌰

🧗‍♀️ “Go climb a tree”: It’s what your folks used to say to get you out of the house, right? Well for the last 30 years, this mantra been an actual competition in Cedarburg. The Wisconsin Arborist Associations just hosted the Wisconsin Tree Climbing Championships, in which participants, well, climb trees. Watch the vid!

🌳 More trees to climb: If the aforementioned tree climbing news got you excited, you’ll be stoked to hear that Milwaukee just used a $12 million federal grant to plant trees in disadvantaged areas of the city, which can lower the heat during the summer and lead to happier folks!

🦌 Hunters, take this survey: The DNR wants to hear from all of you hunters in this survey. It will help inform a database on animal populations and movement in the state (and therefore lead to better conservation, hopefully).
