🫎 Illegal elk shooting LINK
The Wisconsin DNR is seeking public tips after a bull elk, known as #244, was illegally shot and killed in Jackson County.
The elk, wearing a GPS collar and caught on trail cameras, was found on private land near Black River Falls during a DNR relocation effort.
Bull #244 was a key breeder from the original 2016 Kentucky elk introduction and one of the most photographed elk in Wisconsin, making his loss a major setback for the Central Elk Herd.
🐟 DNR launches fish finder LINK
The Wisconsin DNR has launched the Wisconsin Fishing Finder, a new online tool to help anglers easily locate fishing spots across the state.
The tool offers detailed info on fishing regulations, boat launches, shore fishing access, habitat data, invasive species, fish stocking, and more.
Replacing the TROUT tool by the end of May, this user-friendly platform is designed to enhance the fishing experience for anglers of all levels across Wisconsin’s vast waters.
🦟 Strategies to fight ticks and mosquitos this summer LINK
Experts say ticks and mosquitos in Wisconsin will be at normal levels this summer, which still means a high risk of bites and disease transmission.
Simple precautions—like wearing long clothing, using repellents (DEET or permethrin), and doing thorough tick checks—can greatly reduce the risk of illness.
Avoid high-risk areas, stay on trails, and use fans in outdoor spaces to keep mosquitos away during peak activity times at dawn and dusk.

🧭 STORY OF THE WEEK: Love getting lost in the woods? Try orienteering
“It’s like a puzzle, but sweatier,” says Tom Southworth, secretary of Madison’s Badger Orienteering Club. Orienteering challenges participants to find checkpoints—called controls—spread across a natural course. The catch? No GPS. Just old-school navigation skills and a good pair of shoes.
