⛸ Ice skating trail “The Glide” trail closes for season LINK
The Glide, a quarter-mile ice skating trail at Boulder Junction's Winter Park, helped boost local businesses who were affected by lack of snowfall last season, with more than 17,000 laps recorded during its first season.
Businesses like Aqualand Ale House and Boulder Junction Coffee Company saw increased traffic, with visitors coming specifically to skate and enjoy local treats.
While The Glide's first season was successful, challenges such as parking and skate shortages were noted, and plans for expansion and improvements are underway for next year.
☹️ Gov. Evers raises hunting license fees LINK
Gov. Tony Evers' 2025-27 budget proposal suggests a $20 increase in Wisconsin's resident deer hunting license fee, bringing it to $44, marking the first increase since 2005 (an 83% increase, cripes).
Nonresident hunting license fees would also rise by $20, with the resident small game hunting license increasing from $18 to $38.
The proposed fee hikes aim to address a structural $15.5 million deficit in the DNR's Fish and Wildlife Account, which has been impacted by inflation and declining license sales.
🌲 Potawatomi/Door County state parks developments LINK
Two Door County state parks, Peninsula and Newport, each received $20,000 in matching grants for projects, including a gathering area for mountain biking trails at Peninsula and a natural seating amphitheater for dark sky programs at Newport.
The grants are part of the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program, which supports conservation projects with matching funds, and the projects aim to enhance outdoor experiences with improved facilities and accessibility.
The Potawatomi State Park observation tower, closed since 2017 for restoration, will reopen this spring after extensive repairs, and a new accessible lookout will be included in the state's 2025-27 Capital Development Budget.

𐂂 STORY OF THE WEEK: Wisconsin deer poacher sentenced to jail, banned from hunting/fishing, and fined
A new documentary reveals a silent catastrophe unfolding beneath the Great Lakes—an invasion of quagga mussels so vast it’s reshaping the ecosystem on a scale unseen since the Ice Age.
Their footage captures the stark reality of a lakebed covered in quadrillions of quagga mussels, leaving nothing but a barren, shell-encrusted wasteland. - To read the rest of the story, sign up for the Wiscampsin Membership.
