🎣 Story of the week: Free fishing this weekend + sturgeon spearing nears
🥶 Arctic air will bring coldest temps since 2021 on Sunday LINK
Central Wisconsin is bracing for its coldest temperatures since 2021, with highs below zero and wind chills nearing 30 degrees below zero expected Sunday through Tuesday morning
The National Weather Service forecasts the coldest period to be Monday night, following a brief midweek warm-up and light snow, with temperatures beginning to normalize by Wednesday
Meteorologist Scott Cultice notes that while a similar cold stretch occurred in 2021, this upcoming arctic blast will feel harsher due to less snow cover, which typically helps moderate overnight temperatures
🦅 Bald eagle watching days this weekend LINK
You’re invited to Bald Eagle Watching Days on Jan. 18, 2025, in Sauk Prairie, featuring ~free~ events like live raptor shows, educational seminars, and eagle viewing from a newly renovated overlook with help of volunteers
The event highlights the conservation success of bald eagles in Wisconsin, where breeding pairs have grown from 107 in 1974 to about 1,700 in all 72 counties today, with wintering eagles offering prime viewing opportunities along open waterways.
Peak feeding times are 8-10 a.m. and two hours before dusk, where the raptors will be sinking their beaks into carrion and fish (hopefully)!
💰 DNR to host career fairs throughout the state LINK
The Wisconsin DNR will host five career fairs in Eau Claire, Oshkosh, Milwaukee, Fitchburg, and Woodruff starting Jan. 18, 2025, to connect attendees with opportunities in natural resources fields (possibly YOU!).
The DNR offers diverse job opportunities statewide, including full-time and limited-term positions in customer service, IT, administrative support, environmental science, law enforcement, engineering, and natural resources management.
All ages and educational backgrounds are welcome - see the full calendar of dates, times, and locations here.

🎣 STORY OF THE WEEK: Free fishing this weekend + sturgeon spearing nears LINK
Need to fill ‘da freezer? You’re in luck—this weekend the DNR is hosting a free fishing weekend for all ‘Scons, meaning you can cast a line without a fishing license, trout stamp or salmon stamp.
Each year, the DNR hosts free fishing weekends to encourage more first timers (or has-been-ers) to take up this classic Wisconsin past time.
Keep in mind: All other fishing regulations including bag limits, size limits and species restrictions remain in effect. No, you can’t use dynamite, Jim…
Need tackle? You’re in luck! Wisconsin has nearly 60 tackle loaner sites, 19 of which with ice fishing gear. Twelve of those are at our state parks! Check out gear loans here, and see here for fishing clinics around the state this weekend.
Now, on a separate note, folks up around Lake Winnebago are getting mighty excited for the sturgeon spearing season coming up in about a month. Why?
One word: Ice. The past couple year’s have been plagued by poor ice conditions, meaning anglers couldn’t safely access the ice to throw a spear at these ancient creatures.
One guide said he had to resort to mini bikes, mountain bikes, and even—gasp—walking to get out ‘der (hey that’s a lot of gear to haul).
This year, the ice has already hit 10 inches, which spells good news for the anglers and local taverns, gas stations, hotels, and restaurants who rely on the tourism to make ends meat.
We’ll probably cover it more in depth in the coming month, but if you’re really itching for more, check out our past article.
Now forward this email to a friend, have a great weekend, and get out ‘der.
